Lonake woman drowns in Spring River

Sharp County 911 dispatch received a call of a woman being hurt going over High Falls in Hardy. Dispatch received the call at 1:21pm. Law enforcement and rescue personnel responded and found 42 year old Carla Jo Davenport of Lonoke Arkansas submerged under the water. When rescuers arrived Ms. Davenport had been under the water for approximately 15 to 30 minutes. According to witnesses, Ms. Davenport was rafting on the Spring River with her husband and 7 year old son. when their raft became stuck on the rocks. Mr. Davenport got out of the raft and attempted to free the raft. When Mr. Davenport was unable to free the raft, Ms. Davenport got out of the raft and attempted to help him. Ms. Davenport lost her footing and fell into the water and was pulled head first between some rocks. Ms. Davenport became wedged in the rocks while hundreds of pounds of water poured over her. Mr. Davenport attempted to pull her out but could not. A witness who saw what had just happened also came to the aid of Mr. Davenport and was not able to free the victim. Water rescue from Hardy, Cherokee Village and Highland Fire Departments were called to the scene at which time it became a recovery. Rescuers had to utilize the jaws of life on some of the rocks and were able to recover Ms. Davenports body almost 90 minutes after the accident occurred. Ms. Davenport was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident.
