On 05/03/11, Central dispatch received a complaint about someone road hunting on Turkey Pin Road east of Highland. Wildlife Officer Tate was called and Deputy traw and Highland Police Officer Bryan Buchanan also responded to the area of the complaint. Deputy traw and Officer Buchanan made contact with Marilyn Mitchell near a vehicle that had been described in the complaint. Deputy Traw found a Turkey in the bed of the truck. Ms. Mitchell stated to Deputy Traw that she had hit the Turkey with her vehicle and had to put the turkey down. Officer Tate arrived and questioned Ms. Mitchell about what type of weapon she had shot the bird with. Ms. Mitchell said that she had shot it with a pistol. Officer Tate and Ms. Mitchell then went to retrieve the pistol that was in the cabin and could not locate it. Ms. Mitchell then said that she may have taken it to the back of the cabin. While lokking in the rear of the cabin Deputy Traw noticed a disturbed brush pile behind the cabin. Deputy Traw then observed the stocks of two rifles sticking out of the brush pile. Officers located two shotguns, a tactical vest with two pistols and a box containing an AK47 Assault Rifle and a ammo can containing a large amount of ammunition. Ms. Mitchell and her sister Vanessa Mitchell were questioned by officers and learned that the guns belonged to Alan Chaffin who had run off into the woods just prior to the officers arriving. Officers also learned that Mr. Chaffin had run off because he is a convicted felon. Officers Tate and Buchanan entered the wooded area nearby and attempted to locate Mr. Chaffin. They located his four wheeler and continued to look for him. A short while later Mr. Chaffin exited the woods nearby and was taken into custody. Officers found a receipt in Mr. Chaffin's pocket from the Highland Army Navy Surplus store for the purchase of the AK47. Alan Chaffin age 31 of Jonesboro was arrested and transported to the Sharp County Jail. Mr. Chaffin was charged with Possession of a firearm by certain persons a class D felony and Felony fleeing a class D felony. Marilyn Mitchell was arrested for Possession of a controlled substance. Ms. Mitchell was cited and released. Mr. Chaffin's bond was set at $15,000.00 for possession of the firearms and $1040.00 for fleeing.
